3 Simple Anti-Anxiety Natural Remedies

Written by admin on  Categories: mental health education

Natural anti-anxiety remedies are on the increase as anxiety victims turn away from drugs and their bad side effects. Here are 3 anti-anxiety remedies you can carry out at home.

First, did you know that anxiety disorders are believed to be the number one mental health problem among American women. It comes just second to alcohol and drug abuse among American men. It is a very serious disorder that costs the US billions of dollars annually.

And would you believe that anxiety sufferers consult five doctors on average, before they are correctly diagnosed? Which is why, along with their dislike of drugs with their horrible side effects, more and more sufferers are looking for anti-anxiety natural remedies.

So what is anxiety? Generally speaking, a person with general anxiety is someone who, on a daily basis, worries and stresses intensely about a range of issues and things in a way that isn’t normal, and way above their importance.

In our modern lives, we are all subject to varying degrees of stress, e.g. getting married, buying a house, death of a loved one, job worries, etc, etc. But, although we all suffer anxiety and stress, we eventually get over them, and often look back and think, what all the fuss was about.

A general anxiety sufferer, however, experiences those same stressful situations, but doesn’t come out the other side in the same way. They retain stress, fear, anxiousness, etc. They continually worry and obsess about the future and what might or might not happen.

So any anti-anxiety remedy needs to help the sufferer relax, reduce stress and relieve anxiety. Here are 3 natural remedies that have been found to be pretty effective:-

(1) Deep Breathing

When someone is stressed they often breath poorly. This tends to be shallow, spasmodic breathing and sometimes people can actually stop breathing for a time, and not be aware of it. This leads to an imbalance in your oxygen / carbon dioxide ratio which can leave you light headed, dizzy, and tired leading to more anxiety.

You can redress the balance by practicing controlled, rhythmic breathing. One of the best ways is to practice breathing using your diaphragm. Most of us just breath with our upper chest so that not all our lung capacity is being used.

Sit in a comfortable chair with your back straight and your hands relaxing on your thighs or lap. Inhale slowly through your nose, ensuring that you fill your lower lungs first by extending your abdomen, then the top half of your lungs. Do this for 4 seconds, and then hold you breath for a count of 7 seconds.

Then exhale through the mouth slowly for a count of 8 seconds, attempting all the time to relax your mind, shoulders and limbs. Let go of all your stress and anxiety. Pause for a short while before you start another cycle. Try to complete around 10 cycles one or two times a day to start with. Then gradually increase to around 30 cycles several times a day.

(2) Music Therapy

Listening to music has been shown to relieve stress. Music has been found to reduce heart rate and promote higher body temperature, a sign of the beginnings of relaxation.

Pick music that will relax you, not necessarily your favorite music, e.g. hard rock, heavy metal, etc. Some research has shown that Native American and Celtic music can be very relaxing. There are also CDs out there that replicate soothing sounds, such as the ocean, with relaxing music over it.

But, whatever you do, don’t choose music, songs, ballads, etc. that remind you of the sad times or difficult periods in your life. These will have the opposite effect and only help increase your anxiety.

(3) Distraction

This is particularly useful at the onset and during an anxiety attack. Because the symptoms are so horrible a sufferer tends to analyze each symptom as it happens, trying to figure out what is going on. And they tend to think the very worst outcome, even death.

But, of course, we know that they are just symptoms and cannot harm you. So remember that fact at the onset, and then start to focus your attention on something external. Stay in the ‘present’, don’t think about what might happen in the future, by using all your senses of sight, smell, touch, hearing, and taste.

Analyse the building or other object near you. Pick up your pet and cuddle and stroke them. Listen to the sounds around you and try to pick out all the different ones. I think you get the idea, right?

These are just 3 popular natural anti-anxiety tips that can help you, but, the one key issue underpinning your general anxiety is your continual, conscious or unconscious, ‘fear.’

This fear feeds your anxiety, continually building on it, and increasing your anxiety levels to such an extent, that you can actually suffer anxiety attacks. Then, you fear having another anxiety attack, because the symptoms are so terrifying. This builds on your already heightened anxiety; and so on, in a vicious cycle of anxiety.

Unless you can break-out of your cycle of anxiety by eliminating your ‘fear factor,’ it can be very difficult to prevent these anxiety attacks, and, eliminate your general anxiety.

How Psychotherapy Can Help You

Written by admin on January 23, 2012 Categories: mental health education

Recently Lindsay Lohan has been instructed to attend psychotherapy session because of abusing substances. It is important to keep several things in mind while choosing such a program because choosing the wrong program or therapist will not only result in loss of money and time, it could also aggravate your problem. You do not have to be in a bad fix like Lindsay Lohan who was struggling with a substance abuse problem to visit a therapist. You may opt for psychotherapy if you simply feel that you could improve your life by learning how to manage your time, emotions, and your relationships.

One of the things that we forget over the years is that we should constantly be developing if we wish to lead a happy life.

One of things that psychotherapy enables you to do is improve your social life. By understanding yourself you will be able to understand what kind of a friend you are. This in turn will enable you to understand whether you are likable or not. Once you find out what draws people to you, you will be able create the relationships that will bring value to your life.

Often people forget that they ought to evolve to deserve the space that they want in the lives of the people around them. Irrespective of whether you are dating, a young mother, or a person who is finding it difficult to deal with a habit like smoking; attending a psychotherapy program will help you to identify the problem that is keeping you to feel as happy as you can be.

It actually enables people to find long term solutions because temporary fixes like drugs or simply feeling better for some time will not really change the quality of your life. Unless you come to terms with the issues that are really holding you back, you will not be able sort the issues.

It is a good idea to opt for a psychotherapy program that includes some group sessions. Unless you get to practice what you have learnt from the therapists in a controlled environment, you will never feel confident enough to practice these things in real life.

You must not feel that you can’t afford psychotherapy because some of the better therapists are often willing to charge less than their usually fees for people who cannot otherwise afford therapy. It would be good idea to contact TriBeCa Therapy for holistic solutions for life problems.

Seasonal Affective Disorder-Teenagers At Risk

Written by admin on January 22, 2012 Categories: mental health education

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) also known as the winter blues or winter depression is a type of depression that not only affect adults but also teenagers. This type of depression is characterized by its seasonal occurrence or pattern.

Seasonal affective disorder appears and disappears at the same time of the year, usually during fall or winter when there is limited daylight or sunlight. Winter-onset SAD is more common in northern regions, where the winter season is typically longer and more harsh.

SAD is more generally common in teenagers than adults. For adults, the risk of SAD decreases as they get older. The condition is also more common in female teenagers than male and can have a lot of negative effect on the affected teenager. It can interfere with a teenager’s ability to concentrate and succeed in school, and more importantly, the rise in teen suicide during winter is also believed to be as a result of the consequences of SAD.

The various symptoms of seasonal affective disorders are essentially the same as those of depression. However, the only significant difference is that SAD occurs only during a specific time of the year (usually winter or fall). Here in are some of the symptoms common to teenagers with seasonal affective disorder;

• Rapid changes in mood
• Lack of excitement
• Fatigue or low energy
• Sleep disturbances
• A rapid change in appetite, especially a craving for sweet or starchy foods
• Lack of concentration
• Weight gain
• Anxiety
• Social withdrawal

The various symptoms of seasonal affective disorder if not treated could have varying degree of negative consequences on a teenager. It may affect a teenager’s performance at school resulting in poor grades and even damage relations with fellow school mates or friends. This will in turn leave a teenager with feelings of hopelessness, dejection and a depleted self-esteem.

Common ADHD Symptoms and How to Treat Them

Written by admin on January 21, 2012 Categories: mental health education

What are the most common ADHD symptoms and how can you treat them? In this article, you’ll learn what the symptoms are and what you can do to help your child feel better and do better at home and in school.

Most Common ADHD Symptoms

  • Inability to pay attention – although many kids have difficulty paying attention, here are some important behaviors to look for:
    • Makes careless mistakes, trouble attending to details
    • Difficulty staying on ask
    • Often doesn’t listen
    • Problems following instructions
    • Has trouble organizing activies
    • Cannot do tasks that need extended focus
    • Loses items needed to complete a task
    • Easily distracted and forgetful

  • Hyperactive – while most kids are hyperactive from time to time, you will see often see the common ADHD symptoms listed below:
    • Fidgety when staying still is important
    • Inability to stay in seat for periods of time
    • Climbs, jumps or runs when inappropriate
    • Difficulties playing quietly
    • Seems to be “always on the go:
    • Talks too much

  • Impulsiveness – kids tend to be impulsive, but kids with ADHD symptoms are even more so.
    • Speaks out in class without raising hand
    • Difficulty taking turns
    • Interrupts a lot, tends to violate personal boundaries

While you need a diagnosis by a trained professional to determine for certain if your child has ADHD, let’s take a look at the treatment options. Basically, you have your choice between prescription medicines, natural remedies and behavioral therapy.

There are two classes of prescription drugs used to treat the most common ADHD symptoms. There are stimulants, like Ritalin, and non-stimulating drugs. Different drugs work for different kids, but for a lot of kids, drugs do not work at all. In fact, instead of improving symptoms, they make them worse due to the side effects. The side effects vary with the drug, but common ones include restlessness, agitation, mood swings, stomach problems, inability to sleep and loss of appetite. Obviously, adding side effects to the mix can make matters much worse for a child who is already suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. But like I said, these drugs do work for some kids because they can better tolerate the side effects of the drug.

The next type of treatment is natural remedies. Although they are not as popular as prescription drugs because they are not usually promoted by traditional doctors, most parents find that they are very effective. Instead of just suppressing symptoms, like prescription medications, they work by giving the brain much-needed nutrients. The best formulations contain important herbs including Tuberculinum, Verta Alb and Hyocyamus which are very effective at reducing common ADHD symptoms. Better yet, they do so with side effects or any worries about interactions or addiction. Just make sure that the supplement you choose has been FDA-approved and contains the ingredients listed above.

The third type of treatment is cognitive-behavioral therapy. In this treatment, a trained therapist teaches your child how to focus, stay on track and attend to the task at hand, even with distractions. The therapist will also teach your child how to curb inappropriate impulses and behavior. Since we could all stand to learn these skills, this is an important treatment. There are even at-home ADHD behavior programs that teach you how to teach your child these crucial life skills. Behavioral therapy works better when combined with some treatment, whether natural or pharmaceutical, that calms the brain, so it is easier for the child to learn new skills.

So there you have it: the most common ADHD symptoms and three ways to treat them. If you think your child needs help, act now before he or she gets further behind in school. Doing so, will help your child do better and feel good about himself.

The Remarkable History of Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Written by admin on January 20, 2012 Categories: mental health education

The Remarkable History of Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Cognitive Behavior therapy is a form of psychotherapy that helps therapist and patient work together to use rational thinking to identify and destroy patterns of thought, belief systems and habitual behaviors. It stems from a form of therapy that was known as RET or Rational Emotive Therapy, which was developed by Albert Ellis in the mid 1950′s, but has roots as far back as Marcus Aerilius and Epictetus; who believed that man was not bothered by things, but by their perception of things. A psychotherapist by the name of Albert Alder further promoted RET and believed that “a person’s behavior stems from their ideas.” Still, it was Ellis’s work with the combination of influences by renowned behavior therapists that helped cognitive behavior therapy to be what it is today.

In the initial stages, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy used an emotional make-up to help patients overcome problems and behavior. It was believed that each of these emotions caused a reaction in the human psyche and it was that reaction; not the stimuli which dictated whether the behavior was healthy or otherwise.

From rational emotive behavior, a doctor by the name of Aaron Beck developed an even deeper approach to therapy that had the modern psychologist doing much more than just patient analytics. He coined the term Cognitive Behavior Therapy and used it experimentally on his own mind set and with his patients suffering from depression. In most instances, Beck found that the approach to therapy worked more efficiently and effectively.

One of the major points of Cognitive Behavior therapy that makes it a stand alone form of psychotherapy is the fact that it offers patients self counseling skills based on their own rationalizations of behaviors and mindsets. In CBT, patients are given a large amount of homework and while the treatment may be for a specific diagnosis such as depression or anxiety, it has much further reaching benefits that affect the wholeness of a person’s life.

In the 1980′s, as forms of psychological care were often coming under fire Dr. David Burns mainstreamed the idea of CBT by releasing a book entitled Feeling Good. The book was one of the first self-help guides to overcoming obstacles in life and was based on the realization that it is in fact thoughts that cause realities. As more doctors began to transition from an analytical form of therapy to one that helped patients to change their mindset; many prominent doctors came on board. Soon after, CBT became a recognized form of therapy and today many doctors obtain CBT certifications.

Dr. Aaron Beck opened the Beck Center of CBT as a way to help therapists become trained in this particular field of psychotherapy. One of the reasons that this form of therapy works so well is because the therapist is trained to ask specific questions which enable the patient to test their own rationale. When patients realize that a situation and their response to it are not absolutes, they are given many options of replacement thought patterns to use in their therapy.

Do You Know What Are the Causes of Depression?

Written by admin on January 18, 2012 Categories: mental health education

There have been moments in our life when we feel down or upset. Most of the time, these feelings do not stay for long. After all, your life is not going to be an endless round of bad or terrible things happening to you.

After a while, you will feel happy again because you will receive good news, or someone will help you along the way, and your unhappiness will be forgotten.

However, for some people, the sadness lingers and it could even lead to something more serious. You probably know someone or other who suffers from depression but before you can begin to help your friend, you should realize that there are numerous causes of depression.

Science and research has proven that one of the causes of depression is a part of the brain called the hippocampus. Those who suffer from depression seem to have a smaller hippocampus than those who do not suffer from this illness. However, scientists are still unable to determine what causes the difference in sizes.

Another factor that might lead to depression is genetics. Of course, this is still pretty inconclusive however it is safe to take note that anyone who has a relative who suffers from depression should sit up and pay attention. It is not hereditary but being in a sad environment can be pretty contagious.

Besides that, medication or prescription drugs have been known to lead to depression. Many people think that certain drugs can actually help alleviate those sad episodes. However, you should be cautious on this end because you could end up with even worst feelings of depression. Certain drugs like those for the treatment of insomnia and other viral infections can actually cause depression.

As such, it is always important that you get your treatment or medication from the proper channels. Self medication is really dangerous because instead of curing you of an illness, it could lead to another darker problem altogether.

Another causes of depression would be if a person has been struck with a disease or incurable illness in the first place. Imagine suffering from a chronic disease and watching your loved ones suffer alongside you.

That would definitely get anyone depressed because not only are you feeling sick all the time, but your close family and friends are going through a difficult time as well.
