Let´s take the case of Barbara; she has a cleaning compulsion, a very common manifestation of OCD. Her house is immaculate; there isn´t a stray object, a speck of dust or any dirt to be seen in any corner or crevice of the house. This is certainly a great, clean environment to live in; however, the drive to keep her house so clean is compelled by an exaggerated fear of germs and dirt.

We all want to avoid germs, but few of us would spend hours, upon hours, cleaning surfaces that have already been cleaned, wiping off door knobs every time someone has touched them, following people around the house, cleaning up after them. Barbara has been unable to keep a boyfriend because frankly, they were just too messy and brought too many germs into her environment.

For Barbara, the fear of germs is real but it is so overpowering, so encompassing that it has consumed her life. She can´t go to the bathroom at work, because there are just too many germs, she cleans and straightens her office every time someone enters and then leaves it.

She wears gloves every day, warm or cold, because she doesn´t want to touch the buttons in the elevator or door handles at her office that have been touched by so many. The compulsions, the obsessions plague her mind. The only way to keep the deadly thought of germs invading her body, breaking it down, making her sick and maybe causing her death away is to clean and then clean some more.

Barbara needs to expose herself to the feared germs in incremental steps. Since her home is already an exceptionally clean environment, this is a good place to start. She should touch the surfaces in her home and not wash her hands. She should then reduce the number of times she cleans the surfaces in her home.

Have a family member come and visit and refrain from following them around cleaning. Once these victories have been achieved, dealing with the outside world can begin. She should remove the gloves and start touching the elevator buttons and door handles.

If she needs to wash her hands afterward, that´s fine, it´s about incremental steps. Barbara needs to limit herself to straightening up her office two times a day, when she arrives and when she leaves. Start with small victories and build on the successes.

While Barbara is exposing herself to her fears she will need to practice both positive thought redirection and calming techniques to deal with the fears and dread that will pop up.

For Barabra, positive thought redirection will involve refocusing her thoughts away from the germs, to the fact that she has already cleaned that area, or that other people touch elevator buttons without dying. It will also involve a focus on what she can get accomplished if she´s not working rather than cleaning and what that will mean for her both professionally and personally.

An important step in the process to cure Emetophobia, is learning about and understanding your particular case of Emetophobia. Before you can cure Emetophobia, you first have to know and understand what you are curing. Not every case of Emetophobia is the same. To look at it very generally, each person has different causes and effects of their fear of vomit. What are yours?

What causes YOUR Emetophobia? Was there a specific, traumatic incident when you were younger involving vomit? Did you learn the behavior from your parents? Maybe you never vomited as a kid, and are afraid of the unknown? Your fear could also come from a fear of “losing control” when your body expels things regardless of your will.

In addition, are there certain aspects of vomit and emetophobia that you can deal with, and others you can’t? Can you tolerate seeing cartoon vomit, but not in real life? Do you have no problem with motion sickness, but a fear of drinking alcohol? Do you refuse to eat meat at a public restaraunt, but will eat anything at home? Don’t just accept these things, but instead question them. Why is it that one thing causes you more anxiety than another?

When you know your strengths and weaknesses, as they pertain to Emetophobia, you can take advantage of them. Play to your strengths. Identify what things make your strengths strong, and see if you can apply that kind of thinking to your weaknesses. What things lay on the border of your strengths, but you are not quiet as comfortable with? Can you give some of those things a shot, and maybe learn to accept them, and eventually turn them into strengths?

Understanding your fear of vomit is also important when you seek professional help to cure emetophobia. If you can tell a therapist about your strengths and weaknesses, and identify causes and effects of your Emetophobia than you are starting therapy several steps ahead of everyone else!

When you suffer from anxiety, becoming a member of an anxiety support group is a great way of helping yourself on the road to recovery.

The immediate benefit of joining a self-help group is that you will no longer have the dreadful feeling of isolation that can so often accompany a life plagued by anxiety. Meeting and talking with fellow sufferers and finding out that you’re not alone in the way that you’re feeling can be very liberating.

Whilst internet anxiety support groups are always helpful, you may prefer the extra advantages that a local support group can offer you. You will be able to meet other anxiety sufferers in person and many people find that they make long term friendships from some such meetings.

Local anxiety support groups tend to meet up once a week or once a fortnight and you may find that there are regular talks, workshops or perhaps even courses. Another advantage to attending a local group is that there may also be organised outings or social events.

Receiving a recommendation of a particular anxiety therapist is also obviously easier to act upon if that recommendation comes from somebody in your local area. There’s nothing more frustrating than hearing of a great therapist only to find that he/she is miles away from you or perhaps even in a different country!

Going to a local anxiety support group will give you the chance to meet like minded people who know exactly how you’re feeling. They will understand the problems you’re having and so there’ll be no need to feel embarrassed, no matter how silly you might feel expressing yourself.

It can be great to hear other people’s experiences first hand and to learn of different coping methods that they may have found useful. Swapping hints and tips between you can be great and it’s very comforting to know that you’re amongst people who know exactly what you’re talking about (when sometimes it can feel very different from this if you’re trying to explain your anxiety to friends or family).

On the minus side of things, I would always advise caution when attending an anxiety support group.

In my experience, occasionally it can have the opposite effect of the one you had hoped for. If you attend a meeting where there are a lot of people who don’t seem to make any progress with their anxiety problems from week to week this can sometimes be very depressing for you. You may feel that you too will never be able to make any progress and move on in your life, and obviously this won’t be of any help to you long term.

You may find that regularly seeing people who are in a worse situation than yourself may tend to drag you down. Then it can sometimes be difficult to break out from that negativity and move on in a positive way.

However, having said that (purely as a gentle warning, that’s all), I still feel that attending a local anxiety support group is an excellent thing to do.

The one thing that all anxiety sufferers can benefit from is sympathetic support and who better to give you that support than fellow sufferers! Don’t forget also that others will benefit from hearing of your experiences so this is a two-way process.

So do check out if there is an anxiety support group in or near to your home town. Who knows, it may just give you the help and encouragement that you need to enable you to find your inner strength and move on in your life in the way that you’d like to. Good luck!

It’s believed EMRs improve physician and overall hospital efficiency, reduce costs, and promote standardization of care. It is also suspected that they reduce medical errors and ultimately increase the quality of care. Researchers from Harvard have just released a study that may be the first real proof that electronic medical records have an advantage over traditional paper systems.

The benefits surrounding the universal adoption of electronic medical records seem obvious, but until recently, there have been limited ways to illustrate them. A research body from Harvard has just released a study showing that electronic medical records offer a substantial advantage over traditional paper systems. As more healthcare providers are introduced to medical management software, the term EMR (electronic medical record) is becoming a household term. It may also be called an EHR (electronic health record) or PHR (patient health record). An EMR is essentially a patient’s medical chart in digital format. It includes information for each patient concerning demographics, insurance carrier, prescription records, test results, medical history, progress notes, and so on. It also includes identifiers to locate the digital record in a database, and with proper authorization, may be accessed from any point in a healthcare facility or offsite.
It is believed EMRs increase physician efficiency, reduce costs, promote standardization, improve the quality of care and reduce medical errors. Though they have been around for nearly 30 years, it is estimated roughly 10% of health care facilities utilize a comprehensive medical management software system. With such a small sample size, realized benefits have been difficult to present. In 2006, Business Week published a story on the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Buffalo, New York. In the mid-1990s, they installed the most extensive electronic medical records system in the U.S. Staff and patients believe this revolutionized the hospital, decreasing the amount of errors and increasing the quality of care. A recent Harvard study indicates that utilizing electronic medical records, or electronic health records, may reduce malpractice claims. The study showed that 6.1% of physicians who use EMRs have endured a malpractice lawsuit, compared to 10.8% who used traditional paper charts. In the United States, an estimated 100,000 deaths occur every year due to medical errors. These medical errors are often the result of miscommunication, transcription errors, adverse drug reactions and incomplete patient medical records. EHRs ensure physicians have immediate and universal access to a patient’s full medical history, and improve communication between primary care physicians, specialists, nurses, and other health care workers to avoid costly mistakes. According to The Industry Standard, lead researcher Steven Simon, MD, MPH, says, “The results of this study indicate that preventing medical malpractice claims may be another compelling reason for physicians, practices and policy-makers to forge ahead with efforts toward universal adoption and optimal usage of electronic health records.” Simon and his team are just one group of individuals hard at work promoting the universal adoption of EMRs. The VA hospital in Buffalo is prime example of the successful transition to a practice management system. Companies like e-MDs are hard at work supporting this movement with revolutionary medical management software. Congressmen Peter Stark is leading the way with his Health-e Information Technology Act of 2008 introduced in the House this past September. As the number of supporters increases, hopefully awareness and funding will follow. The benefits of EMRs will be further realized over time and with universal adoption.

With the aging, knee joints, back pain and pain in other parts of the body is common. However, it may be controlled to a great level by making some changes in the life-style and taking prescription pain killers as well. But, knee pain due to osteoarthritis is different from the common pain, it makes people unable to walk or do routine works freely. Symptoms of osteoarthritis are severe knee joint pain, inflammation, etc., that need proper treatment.

As far as the treatment of osteoarthritis is concerned, the name of orthovisc injection comes first in mind. Generically known as hyaluronate, orthovisc is one of the effective treatments for osteoarthritis. Because of its successful results, FDA has also approved it for the treatment. It is a prescription medication that is directly injected into the knee joint.

By providing significant relief from the osteoarthritis pain, Orthovisc makes it easy for you to walk and do your regular works without thinking about the knee joint pain.

I’m shocked that so many children in the world have Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. I can’t understand how their parents can deal with the constant movement and noise. After research and a lot of reading, I finally found out how to treat ADHD and how the family can help the child at home. ADHD is a condition where in the child is described to be inattentive, impulsive and hyperactive. It is both a neurologic and psychological problem that is not related to an injury or trauma. The cause of ADHD is an imbalance in the chemicals of the brain, specifically very low levels of dopamine and norepinephrine. It can be treated by several methods including the administration of stimulants, the use of herbal medicine, behavioural therapy and counselling.
Now there are parents out there who wonder how to treat ADHD while at home. The treatment of ADHD should be personalized according to the child. The way the child is treated must be in accordance to his age. This treatment is part of the behavioural modification therapy. Here are some guidelines on how to treat ADHD at home.
* For children 5 years old and below (Pre-schoolers)
 Routine and structure are very important in the life of a child with ADHD. When there are changes, it is good to let your child know in advance. If you are going on a trip, condition your child with the idea so that he won’t be surprised when the day comes.
 Set the limits and expectations before you give him something to do.
 A reward system helps instil in your child which behaviours are to be repeated. Do not use food as a reward. Instead, you can use stickers, more time with an activity he enjoys or even toys.
 Reading and solving puzzles are activities that you can enjoy with your child. These activities will stimulate the child’s mind and you can bond while doing it.
 A timer around the house helps in keeping the schedule. Make sure that there is adequate time given for the child to do his activities.
* For children aged 6 to 12 years old (School-aged)
 Having a short list of what the child needs to do may actually help him accomplish all the tasks he needs to do. Explain to him what you want him to do and make sure that you use clear instructions.
 Rewards still work well for children in this age group. Make sure your child understands how the reward system works.
 Discuss with your child the specific consequences to misbehaviour. As much as possible, do not discipline him in front of others.
 Be a good example.
* For teenagers
 As the child grows older, it is important to get them involved in the process of setting expectations, consequences for misbehaviour and rewards.
 Communication is very important at this stage.
 Always be consistent, fair and predictable in your actions.
So, here are the ways how to treat ADHD at home.

Psychotherapists will usually treat agoraphobia with CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). The reason CBT works for treating phobias is because it helps to reduce the negative thoughts and behaviours that trigger the anxiety.

There are several highly effective panic attacks self help guides available online that have helped many thousands of people overcome agoraphobia. They will help show you how to reduce your anxiety so that you don’t experience any more panic attacks. Eventually with repeated exposure to anxious situations your panic will simply fade away.

You could try a self help therapy called EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). EFT works a bit like acupuncture but you use your fingertips to tap meridian points to release emotional stress. The theory behind EFT is that the tapping helps release emotional stresses that are causing the phobia.

Exposure Therapy is another therapy that can help people with agoraphobia. It works by teaching the sufferer relaxation techniques and then gets them to imagine that they are in a situation in which they have previously experienced panic. They can then practice the relaxation techniques and learn to control their anxiety. They will then need to apply the same techniques by exposing themselves to real life situations.

People with agoraphobia have also been helped with hypnosis. With hypnosis you either have the option of visiting a professional hypnotherapist or you can listen to recorded hypnotherapy sessions either on CD, DVD or MP3 downloads. If you shop around you will find hypnosis recordings for all types of phobias and anxiety including agoraphobia.

Herbal anxiety remedy and flower essences can give temporary support and are a safe alternative to prescription drugs. There are ready made herbal products specifically created for aiding panic and anxiety. These will usually contain Valerian, Lavender or Passion Flower. The “Rescue Remedy” Bach Flower Essence is available in health stores and is very good for restoring calm.

The alternative to natural therapies is medication. The medications used for agoraphobia are anti-depressants and sedatives. Medication should be avoided unless absolutely necessary as it can cause severe and unpleasant side effects. Medication only attempts to treat the symptoms of anxiety and not the cause. Unless the root cause of the problem is treated then there is not going to be a long term cure.

If you are an agoraphobia sufferer who finds it difficult or impossible to leave your own home that shouldn’t be a barrier to you getting help. There are so many things that you can do to help yourself from within your own home thanks to the internet. Most of the self help programs and hypnosis recordings can be downloaded straight onto your computer.

How will a pregnant woman become a victim of a panic attack? How could she conquer it with all the doubts and hormonal adjustments within her? The signs and symptoms of a panic attack within pregnancy is the same with any attack in all age group. What makes it a lot more challenging is a pregnant woman is much more sensitive and even more at risk to other sickness and complications. Two lives are at risk here, the one who conceives and the child as well.

Generally, pregnant women seem to be more sensitive emotionally as a result of hormonal changes she is experiencing for the duration of the process. She needs proper care physically and emotionally just like anybody else. But the majority of cases, attacks occur at the time of post partum depression following the delivery of the baby. Why would having a baby bring about depression and attacks after birth? Isn’t it blissful to have a baby? Well, it could be splendid but it’s a transition from a woman to a mother and it can end up being stressful.

Though post partum depression is still left with no specific cause, hormonal imbalance is said to be actively playing a role. Estrogen, Progesterone and Cortisol levels along with other hormones tend to drop 48 hours after birth. Some other stressors causes attacks, such as weak social support from family and friends. This can be considered a life changing moment.

Several attacks occur on the third trimesters. When a conceiving woman has hormonal changes, many cases of attacks arise in the course of earlier stage of pregnancy. It is caused by unwanted one. This is really crucial and loved ones should give all of the help she needs so as not to have an alarming situation because two lives are at stake.

A pregnant woman could do many things to avoid this. Managing in a healthy way is most rightful thing a pregnant woman could do because medicines could have an effect on the newborn.

It is encouraged that the mother really should attend pre-birth classes Lot of things can be learned there. The father is also encouraged to go to the classes so that he will be able to learn a lot of things when it comes to the changes a pregnant woman could undergo. Eating healthy foods is really advised. A healthy lifestyle would be benefited by the mother and the baby as well.

What causes anxiety disorder? This is a question that really needs to be approached on several levels, with very different practical implications. We will discuss some of the common causes of anxiety disorder symptom here today.

The fundamental question is what doctors and scientists call “etiological”-the scientific search for the underlying origin of a disease and for the factors that lead an individual to develop or be predisposed to develop that disorder. In the case of anxiety disorders, unfortunately, the scientific answer to “what causes it?” is still for the most part…”unknown.”

Different theories attempt to find the cause in specific life experiences, psychological characteristics, dysfunctional brain circuits, and genetic factors. Current scientific research is concentrating on the biochemistry of the brain and neurotransmitters. At present, however, it seems probable that different anxiety disorders can have quite different origins. Panic disorder seems to have a strong genetic component, for instance, while conditions like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and some phobias seem to be caused by external stresses rather than internal physical problems.

On another level the “cause” of any anxiety disorder could be considered the internal mechanism of the disorder. What is the process by which an underlying problem-whether it’s a genetic marker or a particular traumatic life event-gets transformed into the experiential symptoms of a panic attack, a pattern of compulsive behavior, or an inability to function in social situations? For most people suffering from these ailments, their mental anxiety is accompanied by disconcerting and even disabling physical symptoms-racing pulse, dizziness, stomach disorders, hyperventilation, headaches.

This level of causation is actually pretty well understood for many forms of anxiety. It seems to lie in a faulty activation of the body’s natural defensive response to external danger and attack-often called the “fight or flight” response. When the brain perceives danger, it sends out signals and releases hormones that cause the heart rate to surge, the blood pressure to rise, muscles to tense and breathing to becomes rapid, etc. In an actual physical emergency, these physical responses are protective. In anxiety attacks, they are disabling.

Understanding the mechanism, even if we don’t understand the deeper origin, has made it possible to develop treatment approaches that work by shutting down or treating specific elements of the acute stress response sequence. Beta blockers can prevent the elevated heart rate, and anti-anxiety drugs sedate the brain to prevent some of the excessive chemical and hormonal signals. Breath-control conditioning can help people control their hyperventilation. SSRI anti-depressants work within the brain to alter the way specific neurotransmitters direct the release of stress reactive hormones.

Yet another “cause” that can often be recognized and treated in anxiety disorders is the “trigger” that for many people will immediately precede an acute episode or a particular behavior pattern. Sometimes that trigger played a role in the initial development of the disorder, but in any case it has become linked through association to the feelings and symptoms and now has become a second- or third-level cause. If someone subject to panic attacks happens to experience one while on a plane, for example, in the future being on a plane or just anticipating being on a plane may become a trigger to cause other panic episodes. A number of therapeutic techniques have been developed which attempt to recondition that associative process-exposure therapy and desensitization, for example. Similarly, some anxiety is linked to lifestyle triggers like caffeine consumption, alcohol, or stress, which can be changed to help bring the disorder under control.

Even if the root cause of every form of anxiety is someday identified through scientific research, there is no guarantee that those causes would lead to cures. But understanding the more local causes in our body’s responses and in our external environments does offer hope and help to people who suffer from anxiety disorders.
